Local Spring walk

Green is the colour of the Bannau Brycheiniog right now, Spring has well and truly taken hold across the national park. Hedgerows are alive, swallows are diving down country roads, like spitfires in the afternoon sun. The only element, pardon the pun, that isn’t Spring like is the temperature. It is still quite chilly, log fire last night!

Its easy to walk to my favourite view from the cottage, a small 5 minute bimble up through a private woodland, full of bluebells and Buzzard nests. Bluebells flower much later around us, I’m guessing this is to do with the cold temperatures and height above sea level. One difference this year is the cheer volume of Oak saplings that cover the woodland floor. Thousands of them, about four inches in height.

Evening walks are the order of the day, until the sun reaches a greater height in the sky and begins to bleach the beautiful Spring greens.

Our view looks out to the central Brecon Beacons and down through a valley that was once recommended for damming and a reservoir, thankfully back in the 60’s the locals held out and we can now enjoy the abundant wildlife that exists. This year Goldcrests are nesting in the garden, regular Pied Flycatchers nests and a red kite that seems to appear like clockwork every day around 11:30AM.

Its sounds idyllic and it is, we’ve enjoyed London, Cardiff (my home town) and now ten years up here, rural life takes some adjusting, but I wouldn’t change a thing.
