Brecon Beacons Photography Adventure set over two days

A real photography adventure exploring a selection of the less well visited locations in Waterfall Country in the Brecon Beacons led by Neil Mansfield and Matt Botwood. Our aim is to take you to locations that are “off the grid” and/or not easy for the average walker to visit or find.

We will explore rivers, canyons, waterfalls, isolated valleys and limestone pavement areas.

The focus will be on both adventure and photography. In October, the colours will be golden. Most of the main locations of the Beacons will be busy, but we will take you to places only accessible by wetsuit and local knowledge.

This is not a camera tuition workshop, although both of us will be on hand throughout to answer any questions you may have.

Day 1 will be spent exploring the river Mellte by following it downstream in a wetsuit and stopping at a number of locations for photography.
Day 2 will visit the locations of several of Neil and Matt’s well-known projects in the Nedd Valley and on the limestone pavement area of Carnau Gwynion.

Cost – £399 (based on shared twin rooms – £50 single room supplement)

Date12-13 October 2019

Duration – Two days

Attendees – Number of attendees: Minimum 5, Maximum 8

Expanded details of each each day:

Day One:

After staying over-night in the boutique guesthouse, The Grange, Matt and Neil will pick you up just after a hearty Welsh breakfast. Guiding us downstream (in wetsuits) deep into waterfalls country will be our partner for this day, Adventure Britain. Adventure Britain is an extreme activity provider. They regularly take visitors to off grid locations for fun activities within the Brecon Beacons. Neil has photographed in partnership with Adventure Britain for five years. He has spent many seasons in the rivers and gorges of the Brecon Beacons with Adventure Britain, so he knows it well. Neil and Matt have walked through the river together, so have handpicked a number of locations en route to stop.

The fun is getting there; the day will take us through a deep gorge, down waterfalls, across and into the river. A proper adventure. Adventure Britain are fully insured and are signed up to SWOAPG. They follow strict guidelines when entering the remote gorge, respecting wildlife and habitat. After a funpacked day, we will return you back to the hotel for some food and perhaps a beer!

Day Two:

Matt and Neil will meet everyone at Dinas Rock, a location familar from the previous day.

We will visit the locations of several of Neil and Matt’s well-known projects in the Nedd Valley and on the limestone pavement area of Carnau Gwynion. This is an opportunity to explore areas of the Brecon Beacons that are less well known. Again the Nedd Valley involves walking some untrodden paths, a possible river crossing and quiet woods. Carnau Gwynion has a number of unique limestone pavements and many ancient hawthorn trees.

A moderate level of fitness is required. On day 1 we will be walking 5km primarily down a river bed. We will be crossing rivers several times as we explore the River Mellte. There will be opportunities to jump in and float down the river if you wish. We will not be aiming to get wet above knee or waist level (depending on weather conditions on the day) unless you choose to do so. The aim is to stay dry enough to remain warm and enjoy some photography opportunities along the way. However, this is an adventure day out, so expect the unexpected.

On day 2 we will be covering 10km over undulating (but not particularly steep) terrain.
